Stampede is just around the corner and it wouldn’t be a boot-stomping good time without all the amazing musical acts that will be dropping into Cowtown for the festivities! This year’s newly-minted Roundup MusicFest has put together an amazing show at Shaw Millenium Park on Tuesday, July 11th. The show will feature a truly eclectic lineup of bands that will get you rocking out all night long.

Come visit Studio Bell After Hours

Studio Bell After Hours crowd

Studio Bell After Hours is a fun night for adults only.

Do you like music? Do you like to play? Do you like to have a funky good time? Then Studio Bell’s After Hours sessions are for you. The music museum is usually only open during the day, but they are turning down the lights and turning up the beats for special adults night only events. The National Music Centre hosted the first-such After Hours event at Studio Bell this past March for the grown-ups to come out to play. I’ve always loved the idea of sipping on wine View this Post

A packed house at the Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo.

Squee! The Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo just keeps getting bigger and better every year! I love seeing this Calgary event grow into such a cultural force locally, nationally and even internationally. It isn’t often that Calgary gets visited by so many celebrities all at once, but the Calgary Expo provides the perfect opportunities to see all your favourite cult stars from comics, TV, film and more. The Calgary Expo is a four-day affair running April 27 -30, 2017. They will be bringing tons of guests to the show and View this Post

The coffee shop is the community hub that is always on-the-go, filled with laptop workers, moms and strollers, friends catching up, and meetings outside of the office. With a revolving door of patrons coming and going, the coffee shop keeps its buzz going long after the caffeine has been served. Local café Phil & Sebastian Coffee Roasters offers just this social nucleus with their many locations all over the city. While visiting the coffee shop is often seen as a daytime View this Post

One of the things I enjoy most about the holiday season is seeing all the holiday plays! Alberta Theatre Projects’ latest show comes from Calgary’s very own Rebecca Northan, and her take on the classic fairytale of Cinderella set in modern-day Calgary. Now how could that not be a recipe for mirth and merriment?  Slipper: A Distincly Calgarian Cinderella Story is another chapter in the hilarious Northan repertoire filled with charm and wit about life in Calgary. The show is running until December 31st at the Martha Cohen Theatre.

Etsy at Glenbow

Etsy at Glenbow Museum

Etsy at Glenbow artist collaboration is available for sale at the museum gift shop.

The Glenbow Museum is home to so many amazing pieces of Alberta art. Now, the collection is growing a little bigger with a unique collaboration between Etsy and the Glenbow.  A call-out for artists earlier in the summer resulted in a collaboration with Etsy shop artists to create new pieces specifically for the Glenbow Museum . The artists were given a behind-the-scenes tour of the Glenbow archives to find inspiration in the designs, paintings and artifacts hiding in the museums vast repertoire of art. The Canadian pilots also compete for the national title during the course of the festival to be crowned top balloonist.

Locals can watch the skies for the balloons as they complete their flights each day and evening (weather permitting of course). A great family event to take the View this Post

Inside Studio Bell

Studio Bell

It’s been many years in the making but the beautiful musical space that is Studio Bell, home of the National Music Centre is finally in its last touches and will be opening to the public July 1,2016. I was super fortunate enough to visit the facility twice over the Junos weekend last April to get a sneak peek at what’s to come. Calgary will soon be home to a truly world-class facility that will appeal to local and international audiences alike.

The vision

The inspiration behind the building was, well, obviously the music. The design is reflective of instrument View this Post

Fangirling with Sam Maggs

Calgary’s Comic Expo is ready for its 11th year of action and there will be tons of amazing people and things to check out. One event that I think everyone should go to is the Expo’s collab with Wordfest featuring the ultimate lady nerd author, Sam Maggs. Her book, The Fangirl’s Guide to the Galaxy, is an amazing tutorial to help all girl geeks enjoy and experience geek culture.

I feel like this book was totally written for me! I’m a bit of a closet geek when it comes to nerdy things. I consider View this Post

Fun for the family at Y Stage Theatre Series

It’s never too early to give your kids a love for the arts. Vertigo Theatre is known for its classic murder-mystery plays but it also is home to great children’s programming with plays geared towards youth through its Y Stage Theatre Series. The series features five productions for children and youth either produced by Vertigo Theatre or on tour from companies across the country and beyond. With both school performances on weekdays and family shows on the weekend, over 10,000 kids across Calgary get to take part in the Y Stage fun every season.
