Making pizza at Sauce Italian Kitchen & Market

Pizza is one of my go-to food groups – it basically covers all 4 food groups so it’s essentially a superfood right? 😛 This is why I was super excited to make my very own pizza dough for the first time at Sauce Italian Kitchen & Market! If you’ve never been here before, this kitchen is part restaurant, part bakery, and part grocery store that lets you eat, sip and shop all at the same stop. This Calgary neighborhood hub is the perfect pit stop to pick up premade dishes, fresh ingredients or dine in for a meal.

Sauce Italian Market also hosts a variety of cooking classes, dinners and tastings in the evenings ranging from wine tastings to Italian street food to cake decorating and of course, pizza making! The schedule changes seasonally so be sure to check their Facebook page regularly to see what options are available. Classes cost $30+ per person depending on what you are making.

Having never made my own pizza dough before, I was so glad to be shown the ropes by an expert! The team at Sauce Italian Market will take you through all the steps needed to mix, stir, and create a Sauce recipe to perfection. All the ingredients are provided for you along with a demonstration to show you the right skills to master your culinary creation.  Their classes are a fun option for a date night or friends night out activity plus you get to eat your own creation after!

My pizza dough all rolled out and layered with delicious toppings!

Below is the recipe used in the restaurant for their gourmet pizzas. You can find all the pizza dough ingredients at Sauce Italian Kitchen (or you can always dine in at the restaurant if you’d like them to make it for you). It will make two generously sized personal pizzas and then you can add on any toppings you like. Happy pizza making – and eating!

Cooking class recipe: Sauce Italian Market pizza dough

Ingredients

  • 2 ¼ tsp dry yeast
  • 2 tsp sugar
  • 2 tablespoon salt
  • 1 ¼ cup warm water
  • 3 ½ cups 00 (double zero) flour
  • ¼ cup olive oil

Instructions

– Whisk yeast, sugar, and warm water in a small bowl. Cover with a dish cloth and let stand for 10 minutes or until foamy.

– In a large bowl, mix salt and flour with a fork. Make a well in the middle of the flour.

– Once the yeast mixture is foamy, pour in to the flour well.

– With a fork, slowly bring the flour down from the hill side.

– At the same time, slowly add the olive oil until all the flour, yeast mixture and olive oil has been incorporated.

– You need to get your hands dirty and stat hand mixing and folding the dough until the dough is sticky but firm.

– Flour the surface of your table – be generous! Roll the dough gently out of the bowl onto the table.

– Begin to knead the dough until it is a soft, silky consistency.

– Place the dough ball into an oiled bowl and cover. Let proof in a warm area for about 30 miutes.

– Flour your table generously. Portion out a section of dough into desired size.

– Use a rolling pin to roll out dough to about 10 inches in size.

– Top with Sauce Kitchen’s tomato sauce and your other favourite toppings.

– Cook in oven on 425 degrees F for 25 minutes.

– Let pizza cool, slice it up and serve!
