The coffee shop is the community hub that is always on-the-go, filled with laptop workers, moms and strollers, friends catching up, and meetings outside of the office. With a revolving door of patrons coming and going, the coffee shop keeps its buzz going long after the caffeine has been served. Local café Phil & Sebastian Coffee Roasters offers just this social nucleus with their many locations all over the city. While visiting the coffee shop is often seen as a daytime activity, Phil & Sebastian stores are changing things up with special events and activities for the evening crowd.

“These events are all about reminding people that these beautiful [café] spaces are just as awesome at night,” explains Phil & Sebastian’s Creative Director Josie Lunn. “[We want] to invigorate the café scene in Calgary and really solidify our cafes as an evening destination.”

Armed with beer and wine lists as well as delicious evening snacks, Phil & Sebastian have put together an interesting and eclectic array of night time events at their shops. Saturday events feature “Good Neighbors,” an evening with Sugar Water cocktails and vinyl tunes. “Sunday Night Standup Comedy” brings a comedy show to the Mission store, “How it Works” is an interactive speaker series with a new topic each month and Crib game board nights and Pizza Nights are classic fan favourites. The stores have also partnered with local restaurants such as Shokunin and Charcut for Pop-Up Kitchen foodie collaborations. There’s a little something for everybody with each location hosting different types of events.

“We looked at the customers and neighbourhoods for each café to see what might be missing from the night scene in those areas,” says Josie. “We started by looking at the things we love and what we are passionate about as a company. Art, music, culture, food – all of these are a big part of who we are already. And we just went for it!”

Phil & Sebastian customers have taken notice and are showing up in droves. The success of the events means the company will be coming up with plenty of more fun and games for late goers and night owls.
