Local “Shop Boys” unveil 2016 charity calendar

Shop Boys calendar 2016

Calgary is home to a vibrant community of independent businesses. Many of the faces behind the local favourites and neighborhood hangouts tend to stay behind-the-scenes, but a new Calgary-oriented calendar is looking to bring these peeps front-and-center. The 2016 Shop Boys calendar features 12 local business owners to celebrate local independent shops throughout the community.

The calendar is the brainchild of co-founders Emily and Brett McDermott (of Our Daily Brett on 14 Street SW). “We’re really excited about Calgary and all the interesting, independent businesses that have been popping up in recent years,” says Emily. “Whenever we have a day View this Post

Let’s go out and play Calgary

I took my niece and nephew to the park the other day, which is one of my fave things to do as Auntie Irene. They’re still in the under-5 age range where the park is really shiny and new to them. It makes it a cool experience to see them discover all the different pieces of equipment and laugh and play like kids are supposed to do. I don’t know how long this sign View this Post

Finding community love with Local Laundry

Just a few of the t-shirts available from Local Laundry apparel.

Just a few of the t-shirts available from Local Laundry apparel.

I love things that depict my beloved hometown of Calgary because it embodies home and heritage for me (have you seen my gallery wall?). Being able to wear that love on your sleeve is even better and Calgarians can now do that with the fun and casual t-shirt styles at Local Laundry. I discovered these fab tees online and enjoy the yyc spirit they signify. Many of the shirts show off some of Calgary’s most popular neighborhoods and are a great way to show off some local View this Post

Stampede Roundup and Oxford Stomp: Partying for a Good Cause

Stampede Roundup Journey 2

Journey rocks out at the Stampede Roundup.

It’s been a wonderful and exhausting 10 days of Stampede, but in between all the food, midway rides and line dances, Calgarians showed up en masse to celebrate and support a great charity cause. The annual Stampede Roundup and Oxford Stomp fundraisers put together some amazing outdoor concert experiences, with some western flair. Combined, the two events raised $400,000 for the Rotary Club of Calgary. What’s cool is that the funds raised will go towards enhancing the urban park experience in the city with the  Rotary/Mattamy Greenway Project. The initiative View this Post

Meet the new Calgary Public Library

You’ve probably noticed that the Calgary Public Library has changed! A new look and a new feel to go with the new role of a library. I’m really excited for how the New Central Library will change the landscape downtown and filter to all the other branches around the city.  Calgarians love their library and with free memberships, that means a whole lot more people will get to experience the fun. Check out this cute video from the CPL and if you haven’t already, go pick up your free library card.

Making a difference with June Dresses

Day 1 of June Dresses

Day 1 of June Dresses

It’s the start of a brand-new month and the beginning of an amazing fundraiser! I’m participating in June Dresses: 30 days, 30 dresses, all to help empower women through dress. The concept has ladies pledge to wear a dress or skirt everyday for the month of June. Being confident in what you wear goes a long to give power to girls and women. And as the movement grows, more ladies will be part of the cause and help to give back to other women in their community.

I’m lucky to have an extensive wardrobe View this Post
